Visual Harmony

Welcome fellow bloggers and classmates!

As a student of art history, I have always marvelled at the built form's desire to synthesize both splendour and functionality. It is through architecture and urban design that we are able to experience life within a manifested imagination--in other words, experience life within art.

Through this blog I will provide a commentary of my studies in VAH 3388: Histories of Architecture and Urbanism. I hope to share my expanding knowledge of, and appreciation for, these disciplines throughout the semester.

Harmonious spaces where nature envelops and entwines the built form are particularly beautiful to me. Architecture has great potential for compatibility with its surrounding landscapes, and when this coupling is utilized, it amplifies the sensory experience within a space. Mother nature has always offered an intangible, mood-changing atmosphere for me; amongst its sounds, smells and sights, I have always felt peace.

I have included images of a home designed by architect David Guerra. Guerra's thoughtful design is a successful marriage between the structure and nature--the transparent glass walls, rich wooded framing and complementary colouring creates the experience of living in a garden.
